The United States has reported more than 58,000 new coronavirus cases on Friday – a two-month high, according to analysis by Reuters.
Ten of the 50 states reported record one-day rises in the number of cases, including Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri and Ohio.
Wisconsin and Illinois had more than 3,000 new cases for the second consecutive day, something not seen during the worst of the spring outbreak, according to the Reuters data.
Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming, Oklahoma, and West Virginia reported their biggest one-day increases in case numbers.
So far this month, 19 states have seen a record increase in new cases of the virus.
Some 34,000 people are in hospital with the virus – a number that has increased by 18% in the past two weeks as several states struggle to handle the influx.
On Friday, seven states reported record numbers of virus patients in hospitals – Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

The number of deaths is slowing, but still averages 700 a day.
Arkansas, Missouri and Montana reported a record increase in fatalities on Friday.
The number of people in the US to have died with the virus is approaching 214,000, while the total number of cases recorded in the country is more than 7.6 million. Both numbers are the worst in their respective categories worldwide.
It comes less than a month before the US presidential election, with the incumbent Donald Trump behind Democratic challenger Joe Biden in the polls.
Mr Trump is eager to resume normal campaigning after three nights in hospital with COVID-19.
He is due to make a speech from the White House on Saturday before travelling to Florida on Monday for his first rally since his diagnosis.
But he faces criticism for his handling of the pandemic – playing down the effects of the virus and showing disregard for preventative measures such as social distancing and face masks – although not all states require them.
In recent weeks, a number of Mr Trump’s aides and allies tested positive for COVID-19 after attending a Rose Garden event where he unveiled Amy Coney Barrett as his Supreme Court pick.
