Elliot Page has thanked fans for their “love and support” after coming out as transgender earlier this month.

The 33-year-old posted a selfie and message on Instagram, writing: “From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Your love and support has been the greatest gift.”

Page went on: “Stay safe. Be there for each other.”

He tagged two transgender accounts @transanta – an online secret Santa project allowing people to donate to trans youth – and @translifeline, a telephone support hotline for trans people.

The actor signed off: “See you in 2021 Xoxo Elliot”.

The post was liked over a million times in less than 12 hours, with comments from celebrities including actress Jennifer Garner, director James Gunn and singer Janelle Monae.

Page, who is known for starring in TV series The Umbrella Academy and hit films Juno and Inception, announced his new transgender status on social media at the start of December.

Part of his statement read: “I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot.

“I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life.

“I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey.

“I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”
