Anton Afganial, an award-winning artist based in Indonesia, is having a solo exhibition from September 14 to October 4, 2021. The exhibition explores the concept of Nature vs Nurture. Juxtaposing the natural and what is formed through shaping and forging.
The debate on Nature vs Nurture has been around for centuries, dating back to the time of the ancient Greeks. Galon, an ancient Greek scientist, postulated that the nature of human beings is controlled by the fluids in their bodies.
Then in 1874, English polymath, Galton, put forward his own counter-theory and published “English Men of Science: Their Nature and Nurture.” The idea of hereditary domination and the existence of the environment determines the character of living things.
Afganial tries to capture and reflect the meaning of natural and environmental aspects in his works in this exhibition.
Born on an island called Madura, Afganial’s fascination with art began when he was told Indonesian artist Affandi had painted on the beaches of Madura. He then went on to enrol in the Indonesian Institute of the Arts with a major in Fine Arts.
Afganial is moved by situations happening around him, and his paintings aim to capture the energy and emotion of such events. His works mostly feature vivid colours and imagery.
Afganial’s exhibition will be held at the Artsphere Gallery in Jakarta. The gallery follows strict coronavirus protocols. If you’re interested in making a reservation to visit, click here.
