Stranger Things Season 5 Production Delayed Amid Writers’ Strike

“Writing does not stop when filming begins,” the Duffer Brothers tweeted. “While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike.”

Production on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things has been delayed due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. Creators, directors, and executive producers Matt and Ross Duffer announced the news on Twitter yesterday (May 6). “Writing does not stop when filming begins,” the Duffer Brothers wrote in their statement. “While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then—over and out. #wgastrong.”

Additionally, sources at Netflix confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that production will be halted until a later time. Stranger Things is one of many programs affected by the WGA strike; a handful of Saturday Night Live episodes were recently called off, including shows set to feature musical guests like Lil Uzi Vert, Foo Fighters, and Labrinth.

Several late-night talk shows are also pausing on new episodes amid the strike, such as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Re-runs of those shows will air instead.

When reached by Pitchfork, representatives for Netflix offered no comment.
