The Roots’ Black Thought Announces New Memoir The Upcycled Self

His first-ever book will arrive on November 14

Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, the co-founder and singer of The Roots, has announced his first-ever memoir. The Upcycled Self: A Memoir on the Art of Becoming Who We Are will come out November 14 through One World. Broken up into vignettes, the memoir looks at the four powerful relationships that shaped Trotter as he was growing up and on through to adulthood. Check out the cover art for it below.

The Upcycled Self finds Trotter exploring questions that define our formative years, according to a statement, such as “How can we see the story of our young lives clearly? How do we use that story to understand who we’ve become? How do we forgive the people who loved and hurt us? How do we rediscover and honor our first dreams? And finally, what do we take forward, what do we pass on, what do we leave behind?”

Next month, the band will host the 2023 edition of the Roots Picnic where they co-headline the festival with Diddy and Ms. Lauryn Hill. It’s scheduled to take place June 2-4.
