The Boys Showrunner Offers Season Four Release Update Following the Finale of Gen V

Summary

  • Eric Kripke confirms that fans will have to wait longer for the fourth season of The Boys, but there is progress being made behind the scenes.
  • The plot of Gen V, the spinoff series, is deeply connected to The Boys Season 4, with a virus playing a significant role.
  • The collaboration between the writers’ rooms of both shows allowed for a clever crossover, showcasing Butcher’s involvement in the virus storyline.

Now that Gen V has wrapped up its first season, The Boys fans are waiting for the main series to return. Eric Kripke has now given an update on the status of the popular, violent comic book series and confirmed that they will still have to wait a little longer to see the fourth season.

When the first installment of the show premiered in July 2019, no one knew that The Boys would become one of the most successful series on Amazon Prime Video and one of the most acclaimed productions within the superhero genre. It did not take long for Prime Video to release the second entry, just over a year, in fact, and by September 2020, fans were already enjoying the continuation of the story.

Unfortunately, due to delays caused by the pandemic, the third season did not premiere until June 2022, almost two years after the previous one. Now it seems that for the fourth season will see a similarly lengthy hiatus. In an interview with Variety, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke offered an update on the series’ return now that its spinoff, Gen V, has already finished airing its first season. And although in some way he confirms that we will still have to wait, his words bring a little hope to the fans:

You will not know when The Boys Season 4 is airing by the time the Gen V finale airs. But most of the editing is done, we’re now deep into the music and visual effects. Marketing is starting to taxi their planes on the runway. There’s a lot happening behind the scenes of The Boys Season 4, I can say that.

Warning: This part of the article contains spoilers from Gen V season one finale. The plot of Gen V focuses on a group of students at Godolkin University, intended to train future Supes, who discover a complex conspiracy within the institution, whose nefarious purpose is to study young people with powers. In the laboratories hidden beneath the school, a virus is being developed that can kill the Supes, and this information will be very important in the future of the franchise.

In the same interview, Kripke talked about the final episode of the first installment of Gen V, and its unexpected The Boys cameos:

“For Butcher, by the time they were making the finale, we were pretty deep into breaking Season 4. We knew that we wanted that virus to be a pretty big part of Season 4, and we knew that we wanted Butcher to be aware of it. It seems crazy that he wouldn’t be aware of it. It became kind of tricky, because how do we show that he knows about it without it just being dialogue? This idea came up that it probably shouldn’t even happen in The Boys, it should happen in Gen V. The value of having the [two shows’ writers] rooms be in coordination is, our room took it to Michele and her room and said, ‘Can we put Butcher in the end, so we can show that he’s really hot on the tail of the virus?’ It was really cool, because it does a nice little preamble to what’s coming next. And Karl and Ant both were willing to come in on their days off to go work on the other show. But the Homelander part was Michele’s team.”
