Riding Back to Purgatory: Melanie Scrofano and Tim Rozon Talk Wynonna Earp: Vengeance

There’s a certain magic in the air when you get to talk with Melanie Scrofano and Tim Rozon, the stars of Wynonna Earp: Vengeance.

The chemistry between Wynonna Earp and Doc Holliday on-screen spills over effortlessly in real life.

When we met online to discuss the highly anticipated Tubi special, it was clear that this isn’t just another project for them; it’s a labor of love fueled by a dedicated fandom and deep personal connections.

Coming Home to Purgatory

For both Melanie and Tim, stepping back into their characters and returning to Purgatory felt more like a homecoming than just another gig.

“It was a dream come true,” Melanie began with a laugh. “There’s no place like home, and even if your home is really messed up and chaotic, that’s where the heart is for sure.”

Tim echoed her sentiment, adding, “We get to come back to characters we love, to people we want to work with again, and a crew that we just absolutely adore. We’re so lucky.”

It’s clear from their words that Wynonna Earp isn’t just a job for these two. It’s a unique experience, one that has allowed them to grow, not only as actors but as people. And of course, it helps that the fans were clamoring for more.

Melanie made it clear that, in her mind, there was unfinished business. “I think it was just… nobody was done with it. We weren’t done with it; the fans weren’t done with it,” she said. “I felt like we understayed, and the fans weren’t done.”

Tim, who plays the gruff yet deeply lovable Doc Holliday, chimed in, saying the first thing he thought about when he heard the show was coming back wasn’t even the job — it was the fans.

“I got the phone call, and I thought about the fans and how lucky they were and how much they were going to freak out that they were getting more of their show.”

So, what is it about Wynonna Earp that has captured hearts for so long?

Both actors believe it comes down to one thing: a perfect mix of people working together to create something authentic.

Melanie credits the show’s creator, Emily Andras, for setting the tone.

“Emily Andras is a force, and her setting the tone of imperfection being perfect…” she began before getting into a story about the show’s director, Paolo Barzman.

“He took me out for a croissant, very French of him, and I remember being really vulnerable with him, telling him I might tense up. And he was like, ‘Great, I know how to deal with that honesty.’ That’s how we’ve told this story — with truth and leaning into the uncomfortable.”

Tim, too, reflected on the surreal nature of the series.

“Sometimes it’s so ridiculous, the storylines we have. But if you just thought about it on paper, it’s absolutely ridiculous things we’re asking people to care about — and they do.” He laughed, still in awe of the show’s impact. “It’s the magic sauce. It’s got it all.”

Wynonna and Doc: Unresolved Tension

While fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of Wynonna and Doc, don’t expect their fiery relationship to have magically resolved itself in the three years since they rode off into the sunset.

In fact, according to Tim, their communication problems remain as present as ever. “Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s helped them in their communication at all. They’re both still guarded in really what their hearts and minds desire truly, which is sad.”

Melanie quickly agreed, diving into the relatability of their dynamic. “I think it’s funny because the reason they’re not communicating is because they love each other so much. ‘I just won’t say this, and I’ll act like it’s fine.’ I find that really relatable,” she admitted.

In their relationship, there’s an element that hits close to home for many fans. Even in a world filled with demons, gunslingers, and centuries-old curses, the emotional beats are grounded in real human struggles.

“It doesn’t change whether or not you have guns in your hand or somebody’s 100 years dead,” Melanie said. “None of that matters because the relationships are so tonally realistic.”

A Homecoming for the Cast

It’s not just Wynonna and Doc’s relationship that’s been reignited. For Melanie and Tim, reconnecting with the rest of the cast brought its own kind of joy.

Melanie reflected on Wynonna’s relationship with the town of Purgatory itself, saying, “I think as long as Wynonna has her people — Doc, Waverly, Nicole, and Jeremy — then everything else can go by. She’s fine with it.”

But make no mistake — this isn’t just a casual follow-up for fans. The events of the special will have a lasting impact on the story and the characters, affecting everything on every level.

And while the special is being billed as a one-off, both actors hinted at the possibility of more to come.

Tim put it best: “I’ll never say goodbye to this character again. I’ll always be ready any time Emily Andras calls me up to be Doc Holliday or John Henry in any form.”

Emotional Farewells… for Now

As the conversation began to wind down, both Melanie and Tim got a little emotional when discussing how much Wynonna Earp has meant to them.

“This doesn’t happen,” Melanie said, her voice cracking slightly. “This is not a normal thing. So, it’s really important to hold onto the things you love.”

Tim agreed. “He might be an undead vampire killer, and she might be the leather pants, Harley Davidson, burdened hero, but… I believe [their] love is true no matter what happens to them.”

Ever the philosopher, Tim summed it up perfectly with a line that could have easily come from Doc Holliday himself: “It doesn’t matter where you died; it mattered where you spent your time living.”

Perhaps that’s the best way to describe the essence of Wynonna Earp: Vengeance — a story about where we choose to spend our time, the people we hold dear, and the relationships that continue to shape us long after the battle has ended.

As Melanie signed off, she kept it simple: “Welcome home.”

And really, for fans of Wynonna Earp, it feels like we never left.

Wynonna Earp: Vengeance premieres on Tubi on Friday, September 13.
