Don Theking Launches Spaceville Hi-Fi to Pioneer New Genre and Elevate Montreal Music Scene

Canadian music producer, DJ, and artist Don Theking is making waves in the Montreal music scene with the establishment of his platform, Spaceville Hi-Fi. Launched in early 2023, the platform aims to spotlight the city’s emerging talent while introducing a unique genre called Spacebit, a fusion of Reggae, Dub, Chiptune, and Synthwave.

Early Life and Musical Roots

Born and raised in the Lasalle borough of Montreal, also known as “Texas 013,” Don Theking grew up surrounded by a rich musical culture. With Jamaican and Grenadian heritage, Don was exposed to a variety of music genres from an early age, including Reggae, Dancehall, Hip Hop, R&B, and Gospel. His father’s passion for tweaking sound systems and his attendance at events like Caribana and Reggaefest fueled his early love for music. Inspired by legendary artists such as 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., and Drake, Don wrote his first rap at the age of 10 and began producing his own music by the age of 12.

Carving a Legacy

Don’s journey into music production saw him experimenting with different sounds and eventually collaborating with notable artists, including Montreal’s DeusGod and Florida artist Sined The Chosen. His desire to create something original led to the creation of Spacebit—a sound designed to transport listeners away from their everyday stresses and into a futuristic, space-themed world.

Introducing Spacebit and Spaceville Hi-Fi

Spacebit blends the atmospheric elements of mid-70s to 80s Reggae and Dub with the retro vibes of Synthwave and Chiptune, creating a sound that is entirely new yet rooted in rich musical traditions. Don describes Spacebit as a genre designed to “take people’s minds off the stress and troubles that they are facing in this world and to make them feel that they are in space or the future.”

To help spread this sound across Montreal and beyond, Don established Spaceville Hi-Fi, inspired by the traditional Jamaican sound system culture. Spaceville Hi-Fi aims to turn Montreal into a hub of creativity, where artists stand out by doing something different. The platform’s first exclusive song, “Friend No Fiends,” performed by DeusGod, marks the official introduction of Spacebit to the world.

Looking Ahead

As Don Theking continues to push boundaries with Spaceville Hi-Fi, he remains committed to his mission of not only elevating the Montreal music scene but also leaving an indelible mark on global music culture. With Spacebit, Don hopes to create a movement that is futuristic, fresh, and distinct from mainstream sounds.
