Robert De Niro's 2015 Comedy Drama 'The Intern' Heads To Netflix

Robert De Niro‘s extensive list of credits showcases not only his acting skills, but his willingness and drive to continue to work for more than 60 years in the film industry. As one of the greatest and most influential actors of his generation, De Niro teamed up with highly skilled peers and rising stars to create movie magic. In 2015, he and Anne Hathaway starred in The Intern, and now the underrated comedy drama is headed to Netflix in June.

According to What’s On Netflix, the Nancy Meyers film will be available to stream on June 22. It follows a 70-year-old retired executive from DEX One, a marketing company, who finds retirement to be dull. Annoyed with how tedious the days have become since he stopped working, Ben Whittaker (De Niro) applies to fill the open position of senior intern at About The Fit, a rapidly growing e-commerce fashion business in Brooklyn. Whittaker impresses everyone and ends up getting the position, but it takes some time for the CEO, Jules Ostin (Hathaway), to warm up to him. Their relationship improves as Ben is assigned to work with Ostin and he wins her over by organizing her desk, filling in for her driver, and providing life advice that came from a place of experience and love.

The Intern premiered in theaters on Sept. 25, 2015, and was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Alongside De Niro and Hathaway, the movie also stars Rene Russo as Fiona Farwell, Anders Holm as Matt, Adam DeVine as Jason, Andrew Rannells as Cameron, Linda Lavin as Patty, Christina Scherer as Becky, Celia Weston as Doris, JoJo Kushner as Paige, Zack Pearlman as Davis, and Jason Orley as Lewis.

With a budget of $35 million, The Intern grossed over $190 million at the box office. Although its Rotten Tomatoes score is 60%, there are a lot of positive reviews that call the film charming and graceful. A few negative reviews mention that the comedy drama runs a bit longer than it should and it has a predictable plot. The film wasn’t an instant hit, but Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway’s performances were solid.

The Actors Who Were Supposed To Be in ‘The Intern’ Before De Niro and Hathaway

Did you know that Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway weren’t the first choices to play Ben and Jules in The Intern? The movie was originally set up by Paramount Pictures, and Tina Fey and Michael Caine were planned to star in the lead roles. According to a 2014 Variety article, Tina Fey was eventually replaced with Reese Witherspoon, who eventually left due to scheduling conflicts. Anne Hathaway replaced the actress in February 2014, and somewhere during that time Robert De Niro replaced Caine. All were great choices for the film, but De Niro and Hathaway did an amazing job.
