After a two-year hiatus, Gen V is set to finally return on Prime Video later this week. The second season of the acclaimed superhero series, set in The Boys universe, received rave reviews the first time around. However, it seems the latest batch of episodes up the ante in every way possible, delivering the highest-rated debut yet in the franchise.
As of this writing, Gen V Season 2 has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 10 reviews. If the number stays there, it will end up being the best-reviewed installment in The Boys franchise. The first season of Gen V ended up with a 97% Certified Fresh score on the review aggregate website, which is currently second to The Boys Season 3 (98%). The raunchy superhero spinoff is headed towards a near-perfect score, even if it drops off slightly in the coming week. Of course, audiences will get to share their own verdict when Gen V Season 2 premieres on Prime Video on September 17.
Critics, who got access to the entire eight-episode second season, have lauded Gen V for its commitment to the personal drama of the show’s characters and being able to balance that with the satirical nature of the franchise. The main cast, led by Jaz Sinclair, has received the bulk of the praise as the series tackles the sudden death of Chance Perdomo, who played Andre Anderson. Meanwhile, newcomer Hamish Linkater’s Cipher has been compared to a Homelander-level performance. IGN called the season “a wild ride bolstered by a Homelander-worthy main villain,” while Variety says the season “rests on the shoulders of its heroes, well-intentioned people struggling to tell real heroism from the pre-packaged kind.”
