Jersey Shore: Family Vacation’s Cancellation Should Be a Warning Sign for The Challenge

Throughout my teenage years and well into my early twenties, MTV was my go-to for reality TV shows like Jersey Shore and The Challenge.

While I dabbled in Catfish: The TV Show during its early years, it never pulled me in the way those shows did. The same goes for Teen Mom — it just wasn’t part of my regular rotation.

But Jersey Shore will always have a special place in my heart because I was obsessed with it during its initial run.

It was outrageous and didn’t take itself too seriously. Even in encores, there was plenty of rewatch value because it was fun escapist TV.

Its initial cancellation came as a surprise because it felt like there was still so much more to do with the personalities at the show’s core.

They were all famous, yet still coming together to party and then returning to their lives as soon as the show finished filming.

When Jersey Shore: Family Vacation premiered, the show had matured with the audience, and somehow, lightning struck twice.

The ratings were insane, proving the cast was the secret sauce. That’s why it’s surprising we’re in the same situation again almost eight years later.

Jersey Shore: Family Vacation will end with its upcoming ninth season. And judging by the cast’s reaction, the decision came as a surprise to them.

Jersey Shore’s Cast Is Ready for Another Series

In response to the announcement, they shared a video claiming there was so much more to come, suggesting they are lobbying for another series on a competing network.

In recent months, many have assumed MTV is defunct because it feels like the network is no longer trying with its slate.

Ridiculousness also got canceled. That show practically aired on loop for 14 years and became an unlikely cornerstone of the network’s schedule.

Selfishly, I thought that its cancellation would allow the cable network to refocus on the franchises it once had, but with Jersey Shore bowing out, I’m worried about The Challenge.

The long-running competition series actually predates Jersey Shore by more than a decade.

MTV has not confirmed the fate of Teen Mom, but its cast has been pretty vocal about that show being canceled.

The only sliver of hope is that The Challenge Season 42 is already in production, with the cast assembling last month to film what’s expected to be a sequel to The Challenge: Vets and New Threats.

Beyond that, the franchise’s future is in doubt. If all of the above shows are getting the boot, it doesn’t instill much hope that MTV will have much of any reality TV in the future.

Will MTV Really Destroy The Challenge?

Losing The Challenge would be a colossal blow to viewers. This is a franchise that has moved to CBS and Paramount+ for spinoffs, showcasing strong viewer enthusiasm for more.

It’s starting to feel like MTV is cleaning house, and shows like Catfish, Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, and Ridiculousness are being treated as afterthoughts rather than channel-defining content.

They kept the lights on for years and aren’t getting their flowers. That’s a big problem.

The Challenge has been experiencing an identity crisis since the launch of Paramount+, due to continued franchise expansions.

The Challenge: All Stars brought it back to the glory days of The Challenge with many original cast members from the Road Rules days.

The continued success of The Challenge: All Stars proves there’s still a huge appetite for this franchise.

That’s why the cancellation of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation feels less like the end of one show and more like a warning sign.

If MTV isn’t careful, it could lose one of the last reality franchises that still defines what the network used to be.

What are your thoughts on how Jersey Shore: Family Vacation’s fate could also inform what happens to The Challenge?

Do you feel like MTV is quickly losing the shows that made it big and isn’t treating them well?
