Last year, Rick Rubin was cited for violating quarantine in Hawaii. The producer is said to have walked along an empty area of Anini Beach, near his lodging location in Princeville on the island of Kauai, in violation of the island’s mandatory two-week quarantine period for off-island visitors.

Rubin has now paid a $1,000 fine for the violation, The Garden Island reports and a spokesperson for the Hawaii State Judiciary confirmed to Pitchfork.

When reached by Pitchfork, Rubin’s lawyer Craig De Costa said that his client’s charge of disorderly conduct was reduced to a non-criminal violation. Online records reflect the amendment and also show that Rubin pled no contest. The case is now closed, according to the online records.

According to The Garden Island, Rubin made his court appearance via Zoom and opted out of making a statement on his own behalf. De Costa reportedly told the judge that the producer was confused about the island’s rules and that he “had no intention of coming into contact with anyone on the beach (in front of his home).”
