Swiss watchmaker Panerai and German luxury engineering brand Brabus have teamed up on the Panerai Submersible S Brabus Black Ops Edition.
The new release is Panerai’s first-ever skeletonised automatic movement and features aesthetics reminiscent of Brabus’s “Black Ops” line of luxury dayboats. The Panerai Submersible S Brabus Black Ops Edition builds on the Swiss watchmaker’s longstanding dive instrument and features numerous highlights, including its movement, the P.4001/s.
The skeleton automatic calibre features a one piece, off-centred oscillating weight that allows for bi-directional winding — two spring barrels wind up while the watch is worn. The oscillating weight is visible through the case back. Its oscillating rotor, which is made out of tungsten, allows the watch to be light and thin, and the stop balance wheel and seconds reset devices allow time synchronisation with a reference time signal.
Apart from the intriguing calibre, other highlights on the Panerai Submersible S Brabus Black Ops Edition include a patented polarised date display. This allows owners to view the date indication through a window at the 3 o’clock position, without an impeded view of the skeletonised movement. The watch also has a unidirectional rotating bezel — important for divers calculating immersion time — as well as a GMT function, AM/PM indicator and a three-day power reserve. The latter feature is displayed by a sapphire crystal disk indicator that’s filled in SuperLumi-Nova.
Considering both brands are known for working with composite materials, they decided to create the new watch’s case out of a modern-looking dark grey Carbotech. Panerai has worked with this material before, and it features on the Luminor Submersible 1950 Carbotech 3 Days Automatic. The material is carbon fibre-based and features an uneven, matte look.
Panerai Submersible S Brabus Black Ops Edition is also water-resistant up to 300 metres or 30 bar, and comes with straps: a bi-material version and a Panerai Sportech strap with velcro fastening. The watch is very limited, with only 100 pieces available.
“When we speak about partnership, it’s not just about a logo, it extends to the highest levels and smallest details,” said Panerai CEO, Jean-Marc Pontroué in a statement.
“We offer each other complementary skill sets and synergies in terms of products, sales and key markets. The ideas, materials and technologies of our brands will be a vehicle for developing concepts that are both disruptive and spectacular. All of these elements will come together to create results and added value to the benefit of our clients, in terms of service, retail concepts and calibers.”
