The Weeknd and Sam Levinson’s HBO series The Idol has been canceled after one season, Variety reports. The five episode run (shortened from the original plan of six) concluded earlier this summer, with stars of the show later giving conflicting accounts of whether or not there were plans for another season. The show featured the Weeknd, Lily-Rose Depp, Moses Sumney, Troye Sivan, Blackpink’s Jennie, and more, plus an original soundtrack from the Weeknd. Pitchfork has reached out to the Weeknd’s representatives for comment.
“’The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” said a spokesperson for HBO. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
The series made headlines prior to its premiere, as director Amy Seimetz exited the project and was replaced by Levinson. A report from Rolling Stone included allegations that the set was a toxic workplace. The show was not postively received by critics overall.
