Characters of the Week: Grey’s Anatomy, FBI & More Deliver Powerful, Poignant, and Intense Moments

This week, our favorite series delivered an emotional one-two punch, reminding us exactly why we stay so invested in these characters and their journeys.

From When Calls the Heart to Grey’s Anatomy, we watched characters grapple with grief, acknowledge their evolution, and experience heartbreaking turning points that will change everything moving forward.

Let’s dive into our Characters of the Week!

Henry Gowen (When Calls the Heart)

(Ricardo Hubbs/ Hallmark Media)

I’ve loved how much Henry has been featured on When Calls the Heart Season 13, but he shone the most on When Calls the Heart Season 13 Episode 11.

Henry has been heartbroken since his son disappeared, so he made a heartfelt plea to Christopher on Rosemary’s show, begging him to come home.

While Henry wanted Christopher to return, do the right thing, and testify, he also needed him to know he was behind him, and he knew how difficult it was to return after making a mistake.

It truly showed how far Henry has come since the beginning of the series.

I love how Henry used gardening analogies, comparing watering a tree to the hard work we put into ourselves.

He knew his son would make it, but that he would need to put in lots of effort, and Henry promised to be there through it all. It was such a pivotal moment for him.

Maggie Bell (FBI)

(Bennett Raglin/CBS )

Maggie has been through a lot in this series in general.

However, FBI Season 8 Episode 14 was especially heartbreaking for her.

After her sister Erin was kidnapped, Maggie had to come face-to-face with a man who had been obsessed with her for years and try to talk him down, only to end up running through a wooded area and praying not to get caught.

And if that wasn’t enough, after all that, she survived, but her sister didn’t.

Her pain when she learned that Erin didn’t make it was one of the most devastating endings FBI has ever had.

And it was without a doubt one of star Missy Peregym‘s strongest performances on the series to date.

Lucas Adams (Grey’s Anatomy)

(ABC/Screenshot)

Sometimes, Grey’s Anatomy proves that sticking to the classics can work to its benefit. Naturally, the situation with Lucas and Katie paralleled that of Izzie and Denny many years ago, but that didn’t make the earc any less powerful.

Lucas has often felt like a great sailor lost at sea with nothing really tying him down anymore, especially after his relationship with Simone fizzled out. But he found this renewed sense of purpose and something to cling to when he took on Katie’s case.

But we always knew it would end in tragedy, and Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 14 dove right in with the brutal decline of Katie and a look into a man just trying to keep it together.

Lucas’ feelings for Katie were unspoken until she forced his hand in admitting them, and the depth of his feelings for her manifested in many ways, including an inability to resist giving her what she desired.

(Disney/Anne Marie Fox)

Lucas spilling his feelings and acknowledging the elephant in the room felt like a gut punch, especially after realizing it’s too late to matter.

The two lying in bed and discussing the life they could’ve had together under different circumstances packed the emotional punch.

And Lucas, being stripped down to a man not wanting to lose someone he cared about, versus a rational doctor, led to some truly gut-wrenching moments, from his confrontation with Simone to the devastating realization that he missed Katie’s final moments.

The cold, despondent aftermath of seeing the exact moment he shifted his anger, hurt, and blame onto Simone was beyond intense. And Niko Terho delivered his strongest performance of the series to date.

Adam Ruzek (Chicago PD)

(Lori Allen/NBC)

It felt like a long hiatus from the time we last saw Ruzek until his grand return, and an hour that centered on him in Chicago PD Season 13 Episode 15.

The hour was straightforward, but it solidified just how much of a force Ruzek is and the growth he’s had as a character.

Rather than taking the usual approach, we saw him acknowledging a previous blind spot regarding suspicious cops.

And he took the lead on an investigation that had him not grappling with the roles he plays as a cop and a family man, but embracing the fact that both make him a better man and coexist perfectly.

But we also see the dark edge that lies beneath the surface.

The pivotal moment of his using the cage with Boogie is fascinating in that it feels like the culmination of all of the years under Voight and Olinksky’s tutelage, as well as what he brought to the table and worked on internally, coming to a head.

It’s no wonder it left us pondering if Ruzek could, in fact, serve as Voight’s successor when the time comes, a point that felt more glaring in the latter’s absence from the hour.

Alex Cross (Cross)

(Ian Watson/;Prime)

Much of Cross Season 2 had Alex on the hunt for a serial killer in Luz, but coming to grips with the fact that the real evil was the man he was trying to protect, Lance Durand.

The season finale brings that to a head when Alex tries to use his inexplicable connection with Luz — most likely the shared desire for justice despite divergent views on how to secure it — to give her the truth and justice, and to save her life.

But things change when he feels like she slips through his fingers, and with his sights set on Lance, we see Alex’s deep internal battle clawing its way back to the surface.

The Cross finale leaves Alex at an inevitable crossroads, unable to reconcile his desire for justice with the system he participates in that doesn’t exactly deliver it.

And it’s a compelling place for Alex to be.

Dwayne Pride (NCIS: Origins)

(Greg Gayne/CBS)

Can we say that the NCIS: Origins casting team deserves all the awards?

The series does a fantastic job of landing the perfect people to portray younger versions of familiar characters.

And NCIS: Origins Season 2 Episode 11, delivered on its name by showing us the origin story of Gibbs and NCIS: New Orleans’ Dwayne Pride. It also had the two working together in a one-sided beef that was purely entertaining to witness.

Pride never took the bait when Gibbs had grievances with him, but he never backed down either. Nevertheless, the charisma he exuded, the confidence, that endearing southern drawl, and easygoing demeanor were practically infectious.

You can’t stay mad at the likes of Dwayne Pride long, and his ability to wear Gibbs down with his charm, as well as add some levity to the crew, was endearing. So was getting to see an unexpected friendship form before our eyes.
