Americana and folk-rooted band Ponder the Albatross releases its new single, “Genocide,” on Friday, August 28, a deeply personal, mandolin-driven track centered on individuality, presence and resisting the pressures of a world that can pull people away from who they are.
Written by Josh Bower, “Genocide” began taking shape during a month-long trip through Europe, where Bower traveled with his mandolin, playing on streets and at venues to help fund the journey. What emerged was a song that combines Ponder the Albatross’ roots-driven storytelling with a harder rock edge, while carrying a message Bower describes as staying true to yourself despite outside pressure and judgment.
Part of the song was inspired by Bower’s longtime friend Ryan Bogenreif and the idea of recognizing something rare in another person — then urging them not to lose it. Rather than using its title in a literal historical sense, “Genocide” uses the word metaphorically to represent the forces, expectations and pressures that can erase individuality.
“At its core, the song is about staying true to yourself despite the pressures and judgment of the world, and living in the moment,” Bower says. “It is also probably the most rock and roll song I’ve written on the mandolin.”
The song’s bridge turns more reflective, exploring impermanence, the movement of the world and the idea that everything eventually gives way to time. For Bower, that section became a reminder that legacy itself is temporary and that the present moment is what is truly alive.
One of the song’s earliest and most memorable audiences came far from home on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. Near the end of Bower’s European trip, he was traveling with his brother Jonathan Bower and close friend Aaron Luttrell when they found themselves outdoors beneath faint Northern Lights on a night when the island was filled with bagpipers for a local event.
After a crowded pub emptied for the night, the music continued outside. Bower grabbed his mandolin and joined a lively group of Australian travelers and musicians. He played several songs, but when he performed the still-developing “Genocide,” the response changed immediately.
“They went wild,” Bower recalls. “They were cheering during the song and kept asking where they could listen to it. I’m happy that maybe now they finally will.”
That spontaneous performance became part of the song’s history long before its official release, capturing exactly what “Genocide” would come to represent: music created in the moment, shared without expectation and carried forward through human connection.
