These days, more families are feeding their infants formula. Formulas, like cow’s milk-based formulas, have surpassed breastfeeding, with less than 50% of infants breastfed worldwide. Unfortunately, cow’s milk-based formula may place infants at risk of developing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a rare and potentially fatal gastrointestinal disorder.

Preterm infants fed cow’s milk formulas like Similac and Enfamil have fallen severely ill, and some have even died. NEC causes severe inflammation, resulting in tissue death and holes in the intestine through which bacteria can seep into the bloodstream. The disorder may be fatal in up to 50% of diagnosed cases.

Even if babies survive NEC, they could be burdened with lifelong health complications and disabilities. Infants that live through NEC may struggle with growth impediments, neurodevelopmental delays, and gastrointestinal problems.

“Unsuspecting parents are feeding their children these popular brands of formula, but companies are leaving them in the dark,” said Kaitlyn Neufeld, The Lake Law Firm’s leading mass tort attorney. “A simple warning label could have saved many families from these tragedies.”

The Lake Law Firm believes that companies that have marketed cow’s milk formula as safe for preterm infants should be held accountable for the financial and emotional damages their products have caused. Hospital bills, treatment costs, and lost wages for the time needed to care for children afflicted with NEC can add up fast. A lawsuit is an opportunity to relieve parents of the financial hardships brought on by cow’s milk formulas.

With the The Lake Law Firm, individuals can expect reliable and professional legal representation to remove the stress of filing a claim on their own. As many families attempt to pick up the pieces of their fractured lives, they hope these lawsuits will force formula companies to change their labeling and advertising before more infants get hurt.

“While we can’t undo the suffering these families have had to overcome, we can get them closure,” adds Neufeld.
