New York City goes five days without any shooting victims for first time in 30 years | US News

There were zero shooting victims in New York City for a five-day period this week – the longest stretch in 30 years.

New York averaged more than two shootings a day last year, but between Sunday and Thursday police did not record any incidents.

“This is the longest we’ve gone without a shooting victim since the beginning of the CompStat era,” the New York Police Department said on X, referencing the police computer system created in 1994.

The force said this was due to “the brave work that the members of the NYPD do every day”.

But just four minutes after the post was published, the streak was broken when a 34-year-old man was shot multiple times in Brooklyn, the New York Post reported.

The victim was taken to hospital in a stable condition, police said.

Police in New York City have increasingly focused on criminals who use illegal guns, which authorities say has led to “significant declines” in the number of shooting incidents.

“Through precision policing, particularly as it relates to gun violence, lives are being saved every day in New York,” police commissioner Jessica S Tisch said earlier this month.
