‘Shrinking’ Star Harrison Ford Talks About Michael J. Fox Joining Season 3

Shrinking Season 3, the critically acclaimed dramedy starring Jason Segel, is currently in development. Details about the next season of the Apple TV+ show remain under wraps, but recently we found out that Hollywood legend Michael J. Fox will be part of Season 3. Producers haven’t revealed who he will be playing, but co-star Harrison Ford has already addressed Fox’s arrival on the show: “His willingness to be part of our show is a great source of inspiration.”

The Back to the Future star has been battling Parkinson’s disease since the early ’90s. Despite being able to continue his career for decades, Fox decided to retire in 2020, after he found it difficult to speak and learn his lines. Nevertheless, a few days ago, it was announced that he would come out of retirement to join the cast of Shrinking for Season 3.

Ford appeared at an FYC event for Shrinking, and per a report by People Magazine, the Indiana Jones and Star Wars icon talked about co-starring with Fox. “His willingness to be part of our show is a great source of inspiration and gives us a real purpose,” the actor said. In the show, Ford plays Dr. Paul Rhoades, a therapist who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He continues: “It’s not just us coming together, two actors. There’s a story to tell, and our commitment to the story is what joins us together. I appreciate his willingness to be a part of the show.”

Naturally, some viewers may wonder how Fox’s real-life condition will fit into a show that often leans into dark humor and emotionally intense moments. However, Ford also spoke about this and remarked that Fox’s attitude was a turning point. “Emotionally, his humor and his courage are evident,” he says, while making it clear that his character is “in a much different stage of the disease than Michael’s. But Michael, as Bill [Lawrence] points out, is totally there on the intellectual level.” Ford continues:

“I’ve done what I could to acquaint myself with the aspects of the disease that I’m portraying, and I’m at a much different stage of the disease.

“There’s no intention to make it into a joke, but there are people that absorb these kinds of experiences with grace and courage and a little bit of wisdom. And that is not to say that some people do not. It’s just to say that this is a person particularly equipped to communicate what it is that it’s like, and that is something that I feel that is worth sharing with our audience.”

Derek and friends

For Shrinking Season 3, Fox joins a tight-knit family whose bond seems to be getting stronger. Season 2 saw secondary characters getting more screen time—especially Ted McGinley as Derek, Brett Goldstein as Louis, and Wendie Malick as Dr. Julie Baram. The show also introduced viewers to Sofi, a divorced stranger who hits it off with Jimmy. It’s no secret that the character was played by Cobie Smulders, Segel’s co-star in How I Met Your Mother — marking the show as the unofficial reunion we didn’t know we needed.
