It is still hard to believe, but the original Korean version of Squid Game by creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wrapped up with its third and final season on June 27. Over 22 episodes, some of the worst and many of the best characters were gruesomely killed in their attempt to win a massive, life-changing prize. Amidst them was Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) or Player 456, who returned to the island where the deadly children’s games took place, intending to put an end to this insanity, but his fate turned out differently.
Sure, Squid Game is that type of show that gives you a thick skin after a while, because, well, something like 99% of the characters die. That’s the whole premise of the show. There is only one survivor. After watching so many characters die horrible deaths, it should be normal at that point, but it still isn’t. One particular death in Squid Game Season 3 was by far the most heart-wrenching moment in the series, and, even worse, two more preceded the tragedy.

Who Was Jun-Hee/Player 222?
Jun-hee (Jo Yu-ri) was one of the characters in Netflix’s #1 streaming hit series who was introduced before even entering the games. While some players mentioned why they decided to participate in the games at a later stage, Jun-hee’s reasoning became clear right at the beginning of the series. The young woman found out that she was expecting a baby from her ex-boyfriend, who pretty much ghosted her. She considered not having a baby, but eventually regarded her pregnancy as an opportunity to live a more fulfilled life.
Throughout the chart-topping Netflix series, Jun-hee grew closer to Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon) and Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim). Since Geum-ja was the oldest of the players and accidentally ended up there with her son, she deeply felt for Jun-hee and the situation she was in. Hyun-ju shared similar feelings, although her selflessness extended to many of the others as well. The three women grew extremely close, and they ended up becoming a dream trio. Hyun-ju and Geum-ja continued protecting Jun-hee until the very end, which made her death even more devastating.

It’s safe to say that Season 3 did not disappoint.
Unfortunately, Jun-hee’s toxic ex-boyfriend, Myung-gi (Yim Si-wan), was also a part of the games as Player 333. He found out about becoming a father, but ultimately didn’t care about his child.
Jun-hee Managed To Give Birth Safely
It might sound silly to say that Jun-hee had a hard time on the island because, well, none of the players had it easy. However, seeing that Jun-hee was pregnant and there could be only one winner in Squid Game, she certainly had to fight significantly more than others to survive. One game particularly challenged her because she gave birth during Hide and Seek. On top of this, mere moments before Jun-hee’s water broke, she fractured her ankle as the dream trio were trying to escape a red player who was trying to kill them.
Geum-ja ended up helping Jun-hee deliver her baby in one of the rooms, while Hyun-ju was on the lookout and protecting the other two from a potential threat. While fighting off one of the other players who was trying to kill her, Hyun-ju discovered the exit. She went to share the relieving news with Geum-ja and Jun-hee and found the newborn alive and well in Jun-hee’s arms. The relief and excitement didn’t last long, though, because just as a new life was brought into the world, another one was ripped away and taken too soon. While standing at the door, Hyun-ju was stabbed in the back by none other than the baby’s father and Jun-hee’s ex-boyfriend.

As fans eagerly await Season 3, there’s so much to discover by rewatching Seasons 1 and 2 of ‘Squid Game.’
Up to that point, Hyun-ju’s death was the most heartbreaking moment in Squid Game, but, of course, the dystopian series couldn’t just let it be. Just hours after this tragic turn of events, Geum-ja ended her own life in the middle of the night, because she stabbed her son during the game to protect Jun-hee. Two members of this loving trio were gone, leaving Jun-hee behind. To her, her baby became the utmost priority, but when the next game commenced, she knew she had to make a choice.
Jun-Hee’s Tragic Ending
In a heartbreaking moment, Jun-hee revealed that she decided to keep the baby before entering the games because she hoped that it would give her something to live for. In the end, she proved that she loved her daughter so much that she even gave her life, so the baby could have the chance to live. When the next game, Jumping Ropes, began, Jun-hee knew she would never be able to cross the bridge with her baby since her ankle was fractured. Myung-gi offered to help her, but she simply didn’t trust him, which certainly was a good thing. She begged Gi-hun to protect her baby and keep her alive, and so he did. In the end, she jumped off the bridge and ended her life.
What she didn’t know was that the VIPs in Squid Game decided that the baby would replace her as the new Player 222 in the series’ heartbreaking ending, and the infant became the target of the money-greedy men, even her father. It’s almost a relief that she didn’t have to witness how Myung-gi was set on killing his daughter to leave the game as the sole winner of all that money. Jun-hee was always genuine in her intentions. She fought for her daughter, and she had the will to live. Even though she couldn’t be the one to get her daughter out of this dangerous place, Jun-hee gave her life for the safety of her child.
Squid Game is available to stream on Netflix.
