Latest ‘The Mummy’ Reboot Could Be Distancing Itself From Tom Cruise Flop With New Title

The Mummy has been an icon of horror cinema since the early years of movies, most notably in the Boris Karloff movie of the 1930s and Brendan Fraser’s big budget fantasy adventure of the 1990s. However, the next appearance of the bandaged supernatural creature of Ancient Egypt will not be coming under an obvious title, as according to insider Daniel Richtman, the film will instead be called The Resurrected.

It is very understandable that after the Cruise fiasco, Warner Bros. will want to separate their movie from the Universal movies of the past – especially that most recent outing. However, Universal’s recent run of old horror revamps have played things pretty straight when it comes to the titles of their movies, giving fans a definite idea of what they are getting, for better or worse. These have included The Invisible Man, Renfield, and Wolf Man. Titling the new movie The Resurrected may ensure there will be no mix-up between this and either Cruise or Fraser’s versions, but could also mean that some casual cinemagoers don’t view the film as a “Mummy” movie.

What We Know About ‘The Mummy’ Reboot

Unlike many recent classic horror movie reboots, this one is being distributed by Warner Bros., which will come as a surprise to some people considering Universal’s long connection to the franchise. However, maybe the sting of their last attempt to revive the creature is still being felt. Instead, WB, New Line Cinema, Wan’s Atomic Monster, and Blumhouse are behind the movie, which reportedly comes with the following synopsis:

“After his missing daughter mysteriously returns eight years later, a father discovers she carries the spirit of an ancient Egyptian mummy—and as the evil spreads to his other child, he must perform a deadly ritual to save them, even if it means becoming the monster himself.”

Coming from Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin, Wan, and Blumhouse, it is likely that we can expect something a lot darker than the mega-budget offering of 2017. Several teasing images have promised that “something terrifying” is coming in 2026, and Cronin has said that this will be “unlike any ‘Mummy’ movie you have laid eyeballs on before.”

While this seems like a version of The Mummy that will be more brutal and graphic than many of its predecessors, there are still many fans out there that really just want to see Brendan Fraser return in a fourth outing of his Mummy franchise. While the actor has hinted that he would like to see that happen, the chances of that resurrection seem very slim.

The Resurrected – if that does indeed end up being the title – will star Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Verónica Falcón, and Moon Kight’s May Calamawy. The film is scheduled for release on April 17, 2026.
