Christmas on the Danube River? Yes, please.
A Keller Christmas Vacation follows parents Anne and Ben and their three grown kids — Cal, Dylan, and Emory — as they set sail on a river cruise through Europe.
Ten days together on a boat might sound like a dream… or a nightmare. Either way, it’s going to be unforgettable.
When the Kellers board their holiday cruise, they’re all hiding a little something — heartbreak, disappointment, or maybe just the hope that someone else will start the family drama this year.
It’s the kind of setup Hallmark does best, equal parts messy and magical, and the cast was more than ready to dive in.
For Eden Sher, this film marks her Hallmark debut, and she couldn’t stop raving about it. “I loved it,” she said.Â
“If this was the typical experience, boy oh boy, everyone who’s not in Hallmark movies is missing out. It feels like I want to gatekeep it… I want to just do this forever.”
She plays Emory, the youngest sibling desperate to prove she belongs. “She’s got a little sister complex,” Sher explained.
“She really wants to do a good job for her family because she’s part of this family too. But she loses her job before the trip and doesn’t want to tell anyone because she doesn’t want to be the screw-up.”
A little anxious, a little goofy — in her words, “big stretch for me” — Emory’s energy brings just the right dose of chaos to the cruise.
Brandon Routh‘s Cal would probably rather spend Christmas glued to football highlights than stuck on a ship. “He’s kind of lonely,” Routh said.Â
“He finds out that the woman he’s been pining after isn’t really into him… and he missed his opportunity, missed the boat.”
When I pointed out that his character literally gets on a boat, Routh laughed. “Right. It is a boat. He’s a little curmudgeonly, and he just needs a little push — maybe he’ll find some Christmas magic.”
Then there’s Jonathan Bennett, who starts the film reeling from rejection. “My character proposes to my boyfriend at the beginning of the movie, and he says, ‘No, not right now,’” Bennett said.Â
“So that spins my character into a downward spiral. I enter this family vacation completely rejected by the person that I love. My emotions and sensitivities are very high from the start.”
That combination — bruised hearts, family squabbles, and sweeping scenery — gives the movie its charm. Sher was delighted to find just how funny the project turned out to be.
“I read the script and thought, this is funny,” she said. “But they let us be even funnier. They really let us play… okay, I get to fall over. Sure.”
Bennett couldn’t say enough about his co-stars’ comedic instincts. “I wasn’t ready for how funny Brandon Routh was in this movie,” he said.
“Between him and Eden, it just leveled up the entire project. It feels like you’re watching a huge blockbuster movie because the locations are amazing, but the acting and the comedy are just superb.”
Routh summed it up best: “That’s what happens in life — comedy comes right after tragedy. It’s the release of tension… knowing both can live in the same space makes the movie flow.”
Between the heartfelt moments, the sibling bickering, and a few laugh-out-loud surprises, A Keller Christmas Vacation looks like the perfect escape — a reminder that even the most reluctant travelers can find joy when family, forgiveness, and Christmas spirit share the same boat.
