New Radicals Return With First Song in 28 Years

New Radicals, the legendary one-hit-wonders whose frontman, Gregg Alexander, went on to write “Murder on the Dancefloor,” are back with their first original song in nearly three decades. The bucket-hatted bandleader wrote “One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!)” for the soundtrack to One Night Only, a rom-com starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner that comes out this week. Check it out below.

New Radicals broke up in 1999, a year after the sensational success of “You Get What You Give” and the subsequent release of debut album Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too, which had some other songs as well. Alexander went on to write and produce hits including the aforementioned Sophie Ellis-Bextor classic, Adam Levine’s Oscar-nominated “Lost Stars,” and “Game of Love,” a collaboration between Santana and Michelle Branch that Branch recently rerecorded with the New Radicals themselves. The band reunited in 2021 to perform at President Biden’s inauguration, and regrouped again in 2024 to record their own version of “Murder on the Dancefloor.” That version was dedicated to second gentleman Doug Emhoff, who had used the song as walk-on music at rallies.
