The Haute Couture season is always a joy to watch because it represents the highest form of dress making of a heritage fashion house. And brands across Europe have pull out all stops to ensure that these shows are a visual splendour and spectacle to watch.

From Fendi to Christian Dior and Chanel, these brands have exemplified the true meaning of couture. To offer a sense of escapism, fantasy and unparalleled beauty. Other than the intangibles, couture also showcases the savoir faire of these fashion houses. For the upcoming spring season, look to these best looks from each brand to get some style inspiration.

Top 3 Best Looks from Spring Haute Couture 2022

  • Christian Dior
  • Fendi
  • Chanel

Christian Dior

For the brand’s Spring 2022 Haute Couture collection, designer Maria Grazia Chiuri paid homage to the ateliers who have helped to materialise her ideas into stunning dresses and jackets of different styles. This season “honours human relationships with handmade objects, expressing a desire to abolish the boundaries between art and craft once and for all,” as per the show notes. This was seen throughout the collection in the form of intricate embroideries in the house’s signature style.

There were pleated skirts, sculptured coats, an iteration of the Bar Jacket where the cut sits just at the hips, floor-sweeping maxi skirts, halter neck dresses and body suits. The colour palate this season were exclusively black, white and Trianon grey — a favourite of Monsieur Dior.

Fendi

At Fendi’s Spring 2022 Haute Couture collection, women’s artistic director Kim Jones was inspired by space, astrology and the heavenly bodies. The clothes this season saw Jones bringing Rome’s past into the future. This juxtaposition was seen on how the imagery of statues were hand painted on velvet dresses and shear mink cape. The show notes described the couture lineup as “an army of empresses whose divine purity is imbued with celestial power.”

On the runway were shimmering sequin dresses, floor-sweeping trains, high-low hemlines, and tonga dresses. The models wore heelless ankle boots and pumps to further accentuate the futuristic elements. Blues, reds, whites and blacks were the predominant colours at Fendi’s 2022 Haute Couture collection.

Chanel

Opening the Chanel show was Charlotte Casiraghi riding on a horse, a nod to Coco Chanel’s close association to the sport of equestrian. Designer Virginie Viard reinterpreted Chanel icons such as the camellia with the help from atelier house Lesage and the creation can be seen on the embroidered floral dresses. The dress had black, white and coral beads. The bouclé jacket from the House was also crafted in pink and white stripes.

References to the 1920s were also evident from the use of feathers, fringes and the drop waist dresses that were worn on several models. From the 80s, a beloved era of Viard, influences were seen such as the two-tone Mary Janes, while the peek-a-boo midriffs of the 2020s were also observed.
