Black Swan is celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, if that can be believed, and Searchlight Pictures is commemorating the milestone by re-releasing the film. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan starred Natalie Portman as Nina Sayers in a psychological thriller that pushes her to extremes to get the lead role in a performance of Swan Lake. Co-starring Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder, and Vincent Cassel, Black Swan went on to be nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, with the film ultimately winning Portman the Best Actress Oscar.
Black Swan is returning for a two-day limited IMAX re-release in 2,000 theaters, according to Variety. Showtimes will be on August 20 and August 24, under “Black Swan 15th Anniversary Exclusive: Remastered for Imax.” Audiences will also take home a commemorative poster released for the anniversary, although Searchlight Pictures cautions ticket buyers that the offer is only valid “while supplies last.” Regarding the re-release, the distributor added that it will be the “opportunity to experience the film’s full cinematic scope and depth for the first time ever in the IMAX format.”

Why Some Dancers Still Have Issues With Natalie Portman’s Black Swan Performance
Natalie Portman was electric in Black Swan but her performances in the film still infuriates ballet dancers till today. Here’s why.
Black Swan‘s 15th anniversary re-release seems perfectly timed for director Darren Aronofsky’s next feature film, Caught Stealing. Caught Stealing opens on August 29, 2025, and stars Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Bad Bunny, Regina King, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Liev Schrieber. The director of Requiem for a Dream is set to follow that up with a collaboration on A24’s drama, Breakthrough, starring Dwayne Johnson. Meanwhile, Aronofsky has recently come under fire for founding Primordial Soup, a studio looking to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the filmmaking process.
Re-Releases Are Back in Fashion Again
Following a limited release, Black Swan went into wide release on December 17, 2010, and became a surprise box office hit. The psychological thriller brought in $106 million domestically and $329 million worldwide. Made for a budget of $13 million, it was an awards contender that also connected with a mainstream audience. While it is Aronofsky’s second-highest-grossing film, behind Noah with $359 million, Black Swan is easily the bigger success story, given that the biblical epic cost $125 million to make.
Black Swan is one of many films being re-released in theaters in 2025 to celebrate an anniversary. 2025 kicked off with a special IMAX re-release of David Fincher’s Seven in honor of the movie’s 30th anniversary. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith‘s 20th anniversary re-release was a box office hit, becoming one of the biggest re-releases of all time. Focus Features did 20th anniversary re-releases for both Pride & Prejudice and Brokeback Mountain. While not an anniversary screening, Avatar: The Way of Water is receiving a limited-edition IMAX 3D re-release ahead of Fire and Ash. Despite all these films being readily available to stream, the fractured nature of the streaming era has made going to see them on the big screen an easier and more alluring option.
