'Blood of My Blood' Connects to 'Outlander' in a Beautiful Way

The original Outlander series will come to an end soon. Season 8 will wrap up the story, which is based on Diana Gabaldon’s ninth novel, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, and will also incorporate parts of the unfinished and unreleased 10th and final Outlander book, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, sometime in early 2026. The final season of Outlander is expected to explore the events surrounding the American Revolution and how they affect Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitríona Balfe). It’s exciting, for sure, but the best part about Outlander was always the mesmerizing Scottish landscape. Luckily, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a Starz production released weekly from August 8 onwards, is the perfect prequel, as it dives right back into what made the original series so special and captivating in the first place.

Beautiful, green scenery isn’t the only thrilling part of this new romantic fantasy series, because the Outlander prequel has even more in store than initially expected. Outlander: Blood of My Blood explores the lives and romantic relationships of Jamie and Claire’s parents over 10 episodes. Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) are caught in the hardship of wanting to be with each other despite Ellen’s arranged marriage. Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) are trying to find their way back to each other after a tragic car accident, which was the beginning of their time-traveling journey at Craig na Dun. The story blends post–World War I England with 18th-century Scotland in an imaginative time-travel twist. Starz just recently released the trailer for Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and it proved that the connection to the original series is particularly deep.

Claire’s Parents Were Time Travelers

Over the years, Outlander has introduced some of the best characters, each carrying their own special background and enticing traits. Obviously, as one of the main characters, Claire (or Sassenach) is a fan-favorite in Outlander, but there was never much to reveal about where she came from and her parents. Early on, it became clear that Julia and Henry died in a car accident when Claire was just a little child. It was a tragic story briefly touched on in the series and aligned with what Diana Gabaldon mentioned in her novels. The Outlander spin-off, which already has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score, however, added quite the intriguing twist regarding Claire’s parents.

In the series with a surprising Season 2 update, Julia and Henry didn’t just tragically pass away in an accident. It turns out that Claire’s parents were also time travelers. The prequel sticks to the storyline that the two were in a car crash, but adds the thrilling turn of events that Julia disappeared by accidentally traveling through the stones at Craigh na Dun. In an attempt to find her, Henry found his way back in time as well and embarked on the journey of reuniting with his loved one.

The fact that the lives of Claire’s parents don’t unfold only during the period of post-WWI adds a whole new and special layer to their character development. Similar to Claire, both Julia and Henry suddenly find themselves in a world that they have no connection to and struggle to understand. They have a hard time adapting to that specific way of life and reconnecting with each other, and the 20th century was filled with feuding clans, forced marriages, dangerous lords, deadly diseases, and more.

Claire had to find her way through all of it, and so did her parents in the Outlander spin-off. This makes Claire’s unusual journey even more profound, since she thought her mother and father had passed away when she was a child. In reality, though, they went through the same thing that she did, extraordinarily connecting them.

Outlander is all about the love story between Claire and Jamie. Even though they’re quite literally the perfect match, perhaps even more so because of the intense and tumultuous moments they’ve endured, the fact that their paths crossed is wild. Who would have thought that a post-World War II England, 18th-century Scotland, and time travel would be the most amazing combination? The various seasons of Outlander frequently revisit how fate brought Jamie and Claire together and how inexplicable their lives are. Yes, when the two love birds are first introduced, it seems as though Claire is the only person who has ever experienced time travel. Of course, over time, it becomes clear that various other people possess the ability to travel to a different time, and some of them are even connected to Claire.

After Julia traveled back in time, she crossed paths with Jamie’s mother, Ellen. The two women shared an instant connection, sensing what the other was going through and seemingly supporting each other throughout their hardships. As the release schedule of Outlander: Blood of My Blood shows, the 10 episodes will be released weekly. Only time will tell how deep the connection between Julia and Ellen, as well as Brian and Henry, truly is, but it certainly will bring many surprising moments with it.

The shocking cliffhangers in Outlander are one thing, but the unexpected connections made possible through time travel top the list of the series’ most jaw-dropping twists. The fact that Claire and Jamie’s mothers knew each other well, and even their fathers met along the way, changes the entire dynamic and fate behind the original Outlander premise.

Sure, Claire and Jamie were meant to meet because of the undeniable romance and passionate love they share. The fact that their parents knew each other adds even more meaning to their relationship, though. It is almost as though even their parents have become a family already, valuing each other’s support and friendship.

In a way, Claire and Jamie were never truly strangers. They had a connection and learned to feel safe around each other, because their families formed a similar bond. Even though the connection between the Beauchamps and the Frasers isn’t a part of the famous Outlander novels, it was the best choice to add it to the highly anticipated fantasy series.
