Netflix has unveiled a closer look at Guillermo del Toro‘s Frankenstein. This past Saturday, May 31st, at its Tudum 2025 Live Event, the streamer treated audiences to a first look at the anticipated trailer for the acclaimed filmmaker’s latest monster movie. The trailer itself focuses primarily on Oscar Isaac‘s portrayal of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, offering a preview of the tortured mind of the seemingly mad scientist. We also catch a brief glimpse of Jacob Elordi‘s statuesque and powerful Monster.
While the trailer — which you can watch below — certainly alludes to elements that might typically be associated with horror, del Toro recently shared a surprising revelation about his approach to Frankenstein. During this year’s Cannes Film Festival, he discussed the film with its Academy Award-winning composer, Alexandre Desplat (known for The Shape of Water), revealing that his rendition is not a horror feature.
“Somebody asked me the other day, ‘Does it have really scary scenes?’ For the first time, I considered that. It’s an emotional story for me. It’s as personal as anything. I’m asking a question about being a father, being a son. I’m not doing a horror movie — ever. I’m not trying to do that.”

Fans simply won’t believe what the Oscar-winning filmmaker has to say about his ‘Frankenstein’ film.
After Desplat shared that “the music of ‘Frankenstein’ will be something very lyrical and emotional,” and that he was not attempting to “write horrific music,” del Toro responded:
“We’re finding the emotion. And what I can say is, for me, it’s an incredibly emotional movie.”
Alongside Isaac and Elordi, Frankenstein’s star-studded cast includes Mia Goth as Elizabeth, Ralph Ineson as Professor Krempe, and Christoph Waltz as Harlander. Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Covery, and Charles Dance also appear.

Guillermo del Toro Finally Brings Frankenstein to Life
Bringing Frankenstein to the screen has been a long-time dream for del Toro, who has spoken about his love of the 1818 novel by Mary Shelley on several occasions. This Frankenstein project marks the latest collaboration between the visionary filmmaker and Netflix, a partnership that has yielded numerous successes. It follows the Oscar-winning Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which earned the Best Animated Feature Film award, as well as the animated films Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia and the critically acclaimed anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.
Along with directing, del Toro serves as writer and producer. The acclaimed filmmaker produces alongside J. Miles Dale, Melissa Girotti, and Scott Suber.
Frankenstein’s official logline reads:
“A brilliant but egotistical scientist brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.”
Del Toro is an acclaimed filmmaker whose talent has been recognized with three Academy Awards. His impressive filmography includes lauded projects like Pan’s Labyrinth, Nightmare Alley, Hellboy, Cronos, and The Devil’s Backbone. Del Toro’s celebrated directorial credits, combined with his love and respect for Shelley’s gothic tale (which he has called his favorite novel) and a long-time desire to tackle the project, leaves us hopeful for an emotional and nuanced adaptation.
Del Toro’s Frankenstein is scheduled for release in November 2025.
